Illinois has developed a rental assistance program for fiscal year 2025. $75 million in rental assistance is available from the state for various needs.
The Illinois Court-Based Rental Assistance Program (CBRAP) provides funding to Illinois tenants and housing providers/ landlords across Illinois who have pending cases in eviction court. Applicants may qualify for up to $15,000 in emergency rental payments that can can be applied to past due rent, up to $500 for court costs, and up to two months' future rent to prevent eviction.
Applications opened on September 20, 2024. These funds should help landlords and tenants and lower the current eviction case numbers. IHDA administers the program. You can find more information, and apply for assistance, here: https://www.illinoishousinghelp.org/
If you need rental assistance, but are not in a court proceeding, help is still available through the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS). Households who are behind on rent, but not yet facing eviction court proceedings, should contact an IDHS Service Provider Agency. Provider agencies will help you determine eligibility, walk you through the application process, and help you submit your application. Provider agencies can also help you find assistance with utility bills, free legal aid, and additional services. You can find a list of providers here:
